Purpose
The Sandhills Spatial Data Clearinghouse (SPDC) contains
data layers for the Sandhills region of North Carolina and surrounding
counties. The majority of data layers in the collection are connected
to land use. The collection initially provided data for the 2003
Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) around the Fort Bragg Military Reservation.
Now the datasets support a variety of land use related research and
activities over eleven counties. Individuals in state, federal, non-profit
and local governments can obtain data from the SPDC rather than contact
each data provider directly.
Data
Overview
Data is obtained from local, state, federal and private
sources (List of sources). Metadata is created for new files added
to the collection and a retrospective metadata writing project is
underway. The database contains over 500 GIS data layers divided
into 23 subject categories. Data
layers cover single jurisdictions up to multiple county areas. The
data amalgamations are used in regional projects. All data is in
North Carolina State Plane Feet. List
of available layers (pdf).
Access
Data is provided in shapefile format. Shapefiles
are zipped for download.
The OPEN ACCESS section
contains data for regional amalgamations and Richmond county. Over
time more data will be moved to the Open Access portion of the site.
The MEMBERS ONLY section
provides access to most of the data. Data layers can be searched
for by extent (location) or by subject
category. A password is required to enter this section. Request
password.
Imagery files are large and
not available for download. Many county orthophotos are now available
from NCOneMap. If the file
you need is not available from NCOneMap, contact the clearinghouse
coordinator. List of available imagery.
Currency/Accuracy
of Data
Local data is updated every six or twelve months.
No verification of data accuracy is made. The data is "as is" from
the source provider. This data is not suitable for use in engineering,
legal, or other applications requiring precision and accuracy. Statewide
datasets are updated on a 'as needed' basis.
Data Layers Extents
Data is amalgamated into project groups. The code
in the left column is used in the name of a data layer.
